You might not be able to totally define it, but it’s definitely better—smoother, cleaner, and softer. Garrison says this multitasker is the brand’s number one best-selling product, and it’s easy to see why. Not only is it a heat primer, but it conditions, detangles, and protects color from fading. That’s a lot of boxes for one humble bottle to check, meaning less products on your hair at the end of the day—and we love a simple routine when we can get it. After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30?

While some salons were cutting precise lines, Bumble and bumble was teaching young stylists to shear textured ends with a straight razor. When bobs were sleek and meticulous, Bumble and bumble invented the “bad bob,” a wild, choppy cut with a lot of attitude. Much to our delight, Bumble and bumble products are just as cheeky and fun as the salon's signature bad bob. "If you're styling with a curling iron or flatiron, spraying the hair with hairspray beforehand and brushing through will help prolong the style and prevent frizz," she adds. So, what causes our hair to frizz up in the first place, and how do we get it to stop? In its basic definition, frizz is when the outermost cuticle layer of the hair shaft is out of alignment, creating a jagged look.

Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet. Like a painter who needs brushes, you need the proper tools to create sleek, glossy looks. You're probably aware of the impact heated tools can have on your hair, but everyday items like your brush or pillowcase could be cramping your style. Below are just a few of our favorite tools that smooth frizz and prevent the concern altogether. The Bumble and bumble salon was born uptown in the late '70s, but this precocious brand’s heart was always downtown.

Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Heat and UV Protective Primer

When air-drying, foregoing a wrap altogether is key to minimizing frizz, but if you'd prefer your floors to stay dry, Atkin suggests using a microfiber towel or an old cotton T-shirt to wring out the excess water. But when your hair is the rose and the thorns are frizz, the best frizzy hair products can smooth things out. Below, we're spilling our secret frizz-minimizing weapons for softening brittle, jagged strands and minimizing flyaways. Healthy hair days are good hair days—the more you take care of your scalp and strands from the inside out, the better your hair will look. “This is a multitasking super styler that instantly makes hair three times stronger compared to untreated hair,” Garrison says. This is one of those products that just adds a little something to a finished style.

Surf Spray

Multiple factors have an impact on your hair and its texture, but one of the most likely causes is dehydration. "Frizz comes from the hair absorbing moisture in the air," Los Angeles-based hairstylist Jen Atkin tells Allure. Since the most common cause of frizz is lack of moisture, the first course of action is to amp up your deep conditioning routine.

Best Heat Styling Product: Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray

"Make sure you're conditioning and masking to help your hair combat [frizz] and leave [hair] moisturized without wanting to absorb the moisture outside," says Atkin. The law states that Sunday is self-care day (well, even though it doesn’t, it should). In that spirit, we love the idea of Sunday being the day to detox your scalp and hair from the week's product buildup, pollution, minerals, and hard water damage. This shampoo has both tetrasodium EDTA and citric acid, making it a great weekly clarifying product. Something we appreciate about a dry shampoo powder versus a spray is that you can really give special attention to any spots that need a little extra oil absorption and lift.

Weightless Formula: Fekkai Brilliant Gloss Multi-Tasker Perfecting Creme

After applying a puff or two of this formula to our roots, our day-old style looked refreshed and bouncy once again. This creamy paste styler is about as all-purpose as a product can get, featuring beeswax and polymers to give hair hold and flexibility all at once. Use a dab on short hair for volume at the roots, spiking up strands, or slicking it back—the sky’s the limit. (We also might have used this product in the early 2000s when piece-y bangs were all the rage, so you know its effectiveness stands the test of time).

There are a lot of curl products out there, but not all of them help to define curls without leaving hair feeling crunchy and stiff. This UV-protective cream makes moisture a priority with a nourishing blend of oils and butters (avocado, coconut, and jojoba oil; as well as shea and cocoa butter) without sacrificing any style benefits. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors — in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon — is essential to reaching that goal. If you’re not heat styling but still want to target frizz, Atkin says to elevate your post-shower, damp hair regimen with conditioning, moisture-replenishing products (like the ones above).

Product is a scary word when you have thin, flat, or oily hair because it typically means adding weight (which only makes all of these problems worse). That’s not the case with this airy texture spray, which looks, smells, and behaves like a hairspray, but actually leaves your hair touchable, flexible, and truly lifted. “Bumble and bumble helped to reinvent the standards of haircutting, styling techniques, and aesthetics,” says Amber Garrison, Bumble and bumble's global brand president. “We helped free hairdressers from a paint-by-numbers mentality—guided by a fearless, nonconformist approach to hair.” The brand's irreverent ethos is traceable right down to the name of the company. Founder Michael Gordon has said “Bumble and bumble” was meant to be light and nonsensical—a more approachable take on very serious salons. Ahead, discover the best Bumble and bumble products that we loved the most.

Much like any jungle, the island of Manhattan has its own set of smaller, distinct ecosystems. The line between uptown and downtown isn’t merely a matter of city blocks—it’s a whole different way of living. Uptown embraces a buttoned-up, refined, and classic sensibility, while downtown is cool, edgy, and modern. Uptown is Bergdorf Goodman, and downtown is its rebellious, rock-and-roll little sister.

Bateman once told The Guardian that, when it comes to acting, his big secret is that he prefers to play the straight man — because it means he gets tons of screen time. As he put it, "The bad guy is usually in the spice position and that's fun, too, but if you're in every scene as an actor, you have a lot to do with managing the tone of the film or show." Landon kept right on acting following his time on "Little House." He signed on to produce and star in yet another long-running and beloved series, "Highway to Heaven," which was on the air from 1984 to 1989 (per IMDb). Unfortunately, Landon didn't act in many other projects following that series. He shared his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in April 1991, and died on July 1 of the same year (via People). After Little House on the Prairie, he was an actor and executive producer on Highway to Heaven.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, we asked this “prairie head” to run down his definitive 10 episodes. Karen Grassle played the beautiful and loving mother and wife, Caroline. While she had an often tumultuous relationship with Landon while working on the show, she didn’t let it stop her. She opened up about her experiences and her struggles with mental illness and alcoholism in her memoir.

She reprised the role with appearances on several other Disney Channel shows, including on the first three seasons of Jessie's spinoff series, Bunk'd. The Seaver family welcomed a fourth child, Chrissy, during the fourth season of Growing Pains, but Ashley Johnson didn't start playing the youngest sibling until season 6, when Chrissy's toddler days were done. The sitcom launched Johnson's Hollywood career, which led to her further success into adulthood.

Where Sylvia’s assailant got his hands on a clown mask in teeny Walnut Grove, Minnesota, is as much a mystery as why Landon thought this icky entry belonged in the Little House oeuvre. Most people wanted to see Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura; Karen Grassle who played Ma/Caroline Ingalls; or Alison Arngrim who played Nellie Oleson. Some cast members have appeared at smaller tributes, but this was the first time most of them were together. Melissa Gilbert played the main role in LHOTP as one of her first roles, but she went on to have an illustrious television and film career.

Shortly after, he told LIFE, “Death's gonna have to do a lot of fighting to get me.” He died on July 1 of that year at the age of 54. Melissa Gilbert started acting at a young age and was cast as Laura Ingalls Wilder at 9 years old. She starred on the show for 10 years and her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Bonanza actor Michael Landon immediately moved over to Little House after his western series was canceled. Melissa Gilbert beat out hundreds of little girls for the role of Laura on the show. Fun fact, her brother Jonathan Gilbert co-starred as Willie Oleson on the show with her. Gilbert really grew up before our eyes, going from a little tomboy to finding romance, and eventually getting married and having her own children. Grassle kept on acting here and there over the years after the show ended.

Michael Landon joined the Prairie cast as Charles Ingalls and this would become one of his most successful roles. Although the show followed the life and adventures of a family living on a farm in the late 1800s, the issues they dealt with are still relatable to viewers even today. The show became a big hit right off the bat and will certainly be remembered as one of the greatest shows of all time. The series was based on the best-selling Little House Books, which were actually semi-autobiographical, based on author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s real-life family. Laura lived from 1867 to 1957 and is responsible for authoring the book series that would pave the way for several on-screen adaptations.

In the film, the family moves from Wisconsin to Kansas, as the “Big Woods” where they had been living had become too populated. Here, they begin building a home and meet Mr. Edwards, a man who helps the family settle into their new life. The family navigates a slew of obstacles over this period of time, but ultimately live a content life in their new home. In the end, however, the government makes them leave the Native land they settled on, and they move onward to the next place they will call home. Some of the episodes written by Michael Landon were recycled storylines from ones that he had written for Bonanza.

“I wanted to be clear about what it was like for me to work with Michael Landon on Little House, what it was like to work with Wilford Brimley on Our House, to talk about the days. What was it like to be on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine when you're in your early twenties? Butler has appeared in multiple TV shows, including The New Gidget as Jeff 'Moondoggie' Griffin and Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Hank Summers, Buffy's dad. On stage, he starred as Rapunzel's Prince in the original Broadway production of Into the Woods.

Per her professional profiles online, she tapped her Hollywood background for her current work in media and entertainment litigation. Be it frugality or admiration, Landon shamelessly repurposed some of his favorite Bonanza storylines into Little House plots. Among them, Bonanza’s “A Matter of Circumstance” sees Landon’s Little Joe nearly lose an injured arm, and possibly his life, to infection with no one at the ranch to come to his aid. In Little House’s “A Matter of Faith,” an infected wound on Ma’s leg nearly proves fatal before she can join Charles and the girls on a campout. This is technically a two-part episode where there is a drought and Almanzo Wilder (Dean Butler) loses his crop and the land.

Via Vision then acquired the rights to the series and began releasing Uncut & Digitally Remastered version on May 6, 2015 and the final season on April 20, 2016. Also released are Complete Season boxset, the first two being non remastered and the latest version being the remastered Deluxe Edition.

Twins Sidney and Lindsay Greenbush (the latter pictured on the right) shared the role of Carrie Ingalls, the youngest sister on Little House on the Prairie until the family welcomed baby Grace in season 5. The Allegheny County District Attorney told Channel 11 News on Thursday that officials currently consider the deadly explosion in Plum Borough to be accidental. My son was just there a couple of days before playing with Keegan so it’s heartbreaking,” said Brock Harrison, Carl’s Tavern manager. Officials said the effort to resume utility operations to the borough was underway, though electricity coverage for houses neighboring the explosion site would remain without power. In addition to first responders from Crescent Township, officials from Moon Township, Sewickley and Ambridge emergency workers were all called to the scene. In all, about 50 people were called to deal with the fire and aftermath.

Columbia Gas crews were also at the scene; however, a spokesperson said the company did not serve the home involved. Instead, it said the home that exploded was served by a private gas well on the property. A man and a woman died in the explosion, Chief Tomer said. They were later identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office as 87-year-old Helen Mitchell and 89-year-old David Mitchell Jr. Neighbors said they were the sweetest couple and their daughter lived next door.

The state Public Utility Commission and local utilities also were at the scene. Three homes on Rustic Ridge Drive were leveled by the explosion, and about a dozen others were damaged, county officials said at a news conference Saturday night. In a news release late Monday, the county said the home where the explosion happened was having "hot water tank issues." The tank was in the basement CBS Pittsburgh reported. Of the three people taken to hospitals, two were released while one remained in critical condition, said Steve Imbarlina, deputy director of fire and emergency services for Allegheny County. Fifty-seven firefighters were treated at the scene for minor issues.

PLUM BOROUGH, Pa. — Six people are dead after an explosion on Rustic Ridge Drive in Plum Borough that destroyed three homes and damaged at least a dozen more. Plum announced Sunday that it would be canceling community events planned for Monday, including the borough council meeting, public hearing and Monday Market, in light of the fatal explosion. Some neighbors were out Sunday morning, and others were returning to their homes.

The home's foundation and hillside were on fire when firefighters arrived at the scene. The borough says that the doors will open for healing and reflection where memories can also be shared and celebrated. People who live along Rustic Ridge Drive say that when the explosion happened, it was the loudest sound they've ever heard. Neighbors said they smelled gas Tuesday and called the gas company, which confirmed the leaks. To this point, there are holds on the three destroyed properties. This means nothing will be done to them, and any demolition would have to be approved by the borough.

Pennsylvania house explosion victims named; county says house had ‘hot water tank issues’

Authorities have also said the home’s owners had been having problems with their hot water tank. An early morning house fire fueled partly by ammunition present on the property led to the death of two people and a dog on Sunday, fire officials said. The truck was parked in front of a house in a residential neighborhood where the fireworks were found. Law enforcement officials and residents were in the area at the time. Police in Pennsylvania are investigating two explosions that occurred less than two hours apart on Sunday night.

11 Investigates learned the state may have no record of the private well at the site of the explosion. PA’s Department of Environmental Protection’s oil and gas map shows no presence of a private gas well. The private natural gas well appears to be at the center of the investigation into what caused the blast.

All day Tuesday, crews with Peoples Gas were out along Rustic Ridge Drive, with a blue tent set up and an excavator, digging in a yard roughly three houses down from the home that exploded. We’re told Peoples Gas drilled holes on either side of the line and they’re testing the line. The Public Utilities Commission says it’s monitoring these integrity tests.

Plum Borough Police Chief Lanny Conley said three other people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. Two of those individuals have been released from the hospital while one remains in critical condition. The blast sent shockwaves through the area, with nearby windows and doors blown off when the home along Rustic Ridge Drive exploded. It didn't take long before the two homes on both sides also caught fire. Paul Oravitz, 56, who had severe burns over most of his body, died Wednesday in a Pittsburgh hospital, four days after the explosion in Plum.

It is unclear what caused the explosion, and the investigation is expected to be "slow and long," officials said. A representative from the gas company said pressure and smell checks done in the area indicate that the "system was operating as designed" at the time of the explosion. However, he wasn't able to get the family's three cats and hopes they are all right. Rafal Kolankowski, who lives a few houses away, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the explosion broke the windows in his house and knocked him and his wife to the ground. After recovering and checking on his son, he went outside where he said a woman told him another woman had been upstairs and a man was in the basement. The other woman later emerged covered in white ash, but the individual in the basement had not yet exited, he said.

Legendary Pittsburgh playwright August Wilson will be celebrated with a birthday block party this Saturday. Held at the August Wilson House, 1727 Bedford Ave. in the Hill District, the event will include food trucks, live music, games, contests and more. There will be other live entertainment, too, including lip-sync battles and performers. According to LAFD Captain Scott, the firefight was more difficult due to the property having three separate homes on it, which forced crews to fight three separate fires at once. Residents reported a shake in their homes and smelling "some type of odor," according to police.

Lanny Conley, the chief of the Plum Borough Police Department, said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that four adults and one adolescent had died and been recovered from the scene. The police responded to a report of a house explosion around 10 a.m. In Plum, a borough in Allegheny County in western Pennsylvania just east of Pittsburgh. George Emanuele, who lives three houses down from the home that exploded, said he and a neighbor went to the home after the explosion and dragged a man laying in the backyard away from the scene, he told the Tribune-Review. First responders found people trapped under debris, Downs said. Recovery operations were halted on Saturday afternoon due to severe weather in the region.

Three people were transported to area hospitals, including one who was listed in critical condition and two who were treated and released. More than 20 firefighters were evaluated, many for heat exhaustion, authorities said. The blast comes seven months to the day since the Rustic Ridge explosion in Plum killed six people and destroyed three homes. Two people, 87-year-old Helen H. Mitchell and 89-year-old David L. Mitchell Jr., were killed in the blast in the 1400 block of Riverview Road, according to the county medical examiner.

The investigation at the scene of the explosion has been completed and the property is being returned to its owners, the agency said in a release. Art All Night is a free 22-hour-long event full of art, activities, auctions and performances. Sunday, the event is being held — for the first time — at the Crucible Building at 3011 Smallman St.

Another glass object in the collection, a cosmetic container in the form of a bottle mounted on the back of a horse or a donkey, cleverly recasts a type of late Roman glass vessel while retaining the same technique and function (fig. 3). Like their late Roman prototypes, vessels of this type are often elaborately decorated with trailed or applied glass thread. Characteristic of this transitional period is a stucco relief plaque, depicting a king hunting on horseback, from a small palace in northern Iran, datable to the end of the seventh or the first half of the eighth century (fig. 1). The technique (the relief decoration was produced in a mold), style (for example, the rigidity of the figures despite their implied movement), and form of this object, as well as its subject matter, belong to the tradition of Sasanian art.

The names of certain calligraphers are well known, which is not surprising given the primacy of the written word in Islam, as are those of a number of painters, most of whom were attached to a particular court. The identification of these artists has been based on signed or attributed examples of their works and on textual references. Given the great number of extant examples, comparatively few signatures are found on metalwork, pottery, carved wood and stone, and textiles. Those signatures that do occur, combined with rare evidence from contemporary textual sources, suggest that families of artists, often over several generations, specialized in a particular medium or technique.

So if you don’t have institutions, schools, governmental entities, and corporate sectors who value and understand the importance of design, then the designers might feel that their work is not important—and thus don’t archive it. On the other hand, you have designers who are fleeing wars, civil unrest, invasions, and colonialism. They are too busy and preoccupied to worry about the legacy of their own work. Incorporate decorative elements such as intricate tilework, carved wood furnishings, and patterned textiles to evoke the rich cultural heritage of Morocco and transport visitors to a world of exotic charm and hospitality. One of the most important arts of the ninth century is architectural ornament, rendered in stucco, wood, or stone. The museum’s beautifully carved wood panel of this period (fig. 9), for instance, comes from Egypt, where wood, on account of its rarity and cost, was decorated with care and used in contexts generally reserved for luxury materials. Although it is impossible to say how this wood panel was used originally – perhaps it once formed part of a door – it is possible to assign it to the late ninth century on the basis of its distinctive decoration. Decorated in the beveled style, so called on account of the characteristic slant of the carved design, the panel depicts highly stylized leaves that have been transformed into abstract motifs. As is typical of this style, it is impossible to distinguish between background and foreground or between natural and abstract forms.

Much of the calligraphic abstraction which was a style that began in the 1950s was influenced by Arabic calligraphy. In the 20th century Arab art, poster design, typography was influenced by themes of identity, addressing questions like what did it mean to be Arab, themes of immigration, modernity, secularization and Islamization. Much of the people reacted through art, expressing their sentiments and confusion through harmonizing colors, lines, shapes and designs. Between the 1970s and 1980s, was a troubling time for many Arabs as they dealt with exile, civil war; many designers from Lebanon were forced into exiled and Iraqis were forced to flee because of the Iraqi gulf. The civil strifes and wars contributed to the world of Arabic design and typography. Royal patronage played an important role in the making of Islamic art, as it has in the arts of other cultures.

These objects nonetheless frequently reflect the same styles and make use of the same forms and techniques employed in courtly art. It not only describes the art created specifically in the service of Islam, but it also characterizes secular art produced in lands under Islamic rule or influence, whatever the artist’s or the patron’s religious affiliation. The term suggests an art unified in style and purpose, and indeed there are certain common features that distinguish the arts of all Islamic lands. Of paramount concern to the development of this singular art is Islam itself, which fostered the creation of a distinctive visual culture with its own unique artistic language.

As this name suggests, the epigraphic decoration (rendered in Kufic script) was often finely embroidered (see Early Medieval Art [fig. 16] ), but the inscriptions could also be woven directly into the cloth, a technique known as tapestry-weaving. Despite their prevalence, comparatively few textiles have survived from the early Islamic period. Textiles are inherently fragile, and because of their value Islamic fabrics in all periods were cut down and reused over and over again until they literally wore out. Many of the extant early Islamic textiles were found in Egypt, primarily in graves, where the dark and dry conditions helped to preserve them. The fragments that have survived are fabricated from cotton, linen, silk, and wool, often dyed vivid colors. They demonstrate a well-developed textile technology notable for its use of complicated and richly colored designs.

The construction of mosques and other religious buildings, including their decoration and furnishings, was the responsibility of the ruler and the prerogative of high court officials. Such monuments not only provided for the spiritual needs of the Muslim community but often served educational and charitable functions as well. Royal patronage of secular art was also a standard feature of Islamic sovereignty, one that enabled the ruler to demonstrate the splendor of his court and, by extension, the superiority of his state. Evidence of courtly patronage is derived from the works of art themselves, but an equally important source of information is the extensive body of historical texts that attest to royal sponsorship of the arts almost throughout the Islamic period. These historical works also indicate that only a fraction of such court-sponsored art has survived; objects made of precious materials are particularly rare. From the fourteenth century onward, especially in eastern Islamic lands, the arts of the book provide the best documentation of courtly patronage.

Wood is a fundamental material in Arabic interior design, a material that is transformed into a work of art through intricate carvings and ornate patterns. These woodwork accents, be it the intricate panels on the walls, the screens that filter light, or the furniture that adorns the space with an essence that is impossible to ignore. Elegant furniture pieces and rich textiles add to the richness and warmth of the Arabic interior spaces. Plush carpets, silk curtains, and embroidered cushions in vibrant colours and intricate patterns create a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

The ware is then refired in a muffled, or reducing, kiln, so that the oxygen is drawn out from the metal oxides, producing a dazzling metallic surface. Of the many diverse arts that flourished in the early Islamic period, textiles played an especially significant role in society, one that continued in subsequent periods. Textiles were ubiquitous in Islamic lands, serving as clothing, household furnishings, and portable architecture (tents). The manufacture of and trade in textiles were highly sophisticated and profitable industries that built upon Byzantine and Sasanian traditions. Often made with costly materials such as silk, and gold- and silver-wrapped thread and decorated with complex designs, textiles were luxury goods signifying wealth and social status. Islamic textiles were also widely exported to the West, where their prominence is underscored by their impact on European languages.

Gilded silver was a favorite material in Sasanian times, and such precious metals also seem to have been used in the production of luxury wares in early Islamic Iran, based on evidence from historical and literary texts. The silver and gold objects described in the textual sources have not survived in any quantity and were perhaps melted down in times of need. A large number of bronze and brass vessels and utensils are preserved, however, attesting to the high degree of skill and sophistication among Islamic metalworkers. Of course, not all works of Islamic art were sponsored by the court; in fact, the majority of objects and manuscripts in museum collections originated elsewhere. Such works of art – including pottery, base metalware, carpets, and textiles – have often been viewed as the products of urban, middle-class patronage.

Restrictions on figurative arts are, however, found in another body of literature known as Hadith, or "tradition." Hadith includes accounts of the sayings, deeds, and thoughts of the Prophet and is superseded in importance only by the Qur’an. At this time, there are no official fundraisers set up for the family of David and Helen Mitchell. These fundraisers are presented as being for the family of the victims, but they are not connected to the family. Crescent Township police are warning people who may wish to donate that fraudulent fundraisers have been set up. The explosion is under investigation by the Allegheny County Fire Marshals Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Their factory along McGovern Boulevard in Crescent Township is right across the street from Riverview Road, separated by a large hillside. Officials said at least two other homes nearby were damaged in the blast.

Abigail Gardner, the director of communications for Allegheny County, identified the victims as David Mitchell Jr. and Helen Mitchell. The first unit arrived a few minutes after the call to find the home "completely leveled by some type of explosion," Crescent Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Andrew Tomer said at a news briefing. Eighteen fire departments responded to the scene, which remains active. Allegheny County Emergency Management officials and the Allegheny County Fire Marshals are at the scene as well. Officials have said one was found outside a garage, four were in the basement and the sixth was located and rescued from the rear yard.

Two people injured in the incident were transported to local hospitals and have since been released. In all, 57 firefighters were treated on scene for minor issues — many of them for heat exhaustion. Josh Shapiro tweeted that he and his wife, Lori, were praying for the victims, adding that his office was working with state emergency management officials to assist local emergency responders. The blast destroyed three homes and damaged at least a dozen others, officials said. Nearly 60 firefighters were treated for minor medical issues. Several homes were destroyed when the explosion occurred Saturday morning in Allegheny County, officials told reporters during a press conference on Sunday afternoon. Plum and county law enforcement, as well as the county fire marshal's office, are investigating, and the state public utilities commission and local utilities were also at the scene.

A family member tells Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that two of the victims were father and son, Casey and Keegan Clontz. KDKA-TV looked at the state's oil and gas map and didn't see any kind of well listed for that address. Heavy black smoke was seen billowing into the sky after the explosion.

NBC affiliate WPXI of Pittsburgh reported that homes several miles away were damaged. Tomer said at least two other homes suffered damage but did not say how close they were to the explosion site. “This is certainly a sad, sad day and a sad time, for not just the folks in Plum but all the folks in the community and in this region,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said, AP reported. The district is making its crisis intervention team available on Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure the emotional well-being of our students and families as we navigate this unimaginable tragedy,” Walsh said. Video given to Channel 11 shows the moment a house exploded in Plum Borough. "You see this stuff, and when it's this close, you don't even know what to think. These are your neighbors ... you may not know them all, but this is a really tight community."

The explosion happened in a remote location and officials are asking the public to stay out of the area. "The private gas well was secured by a gas company rep that was in the area and then the propane tanks that are on site were also secured. Other than that, there's no other utilities up in that area," he said. "The power was secured to the initial explosion building." Thomas was the borough manager and Heather Oravitz was the community development director. The development is on abandoned mine land surrounded by shallow oil and gas wells, some of which have been abandoned.
